1 girl 5 gays is a Canadian talk show that
plays on MTV (Canada). LOGO a network geared toward the LGBT community picked
up the show and it now airs in U.S. In each episode there are five gay men and
they are asked questions about sex, HIV, romance and relationships by their
host. I have been a fan of the show for a while now, I find the guys to be extremely
funny and honest. After the show gained success the network decided to start a show
with 5 lesbians and the same host. Almost immediately there was negative feedback.
Watchers commented that they missed the guys, that the girls were annoying,
bitchy and ugly. Just every stereotype that there was about women was said.
What I found to be interesting was that many
of the gay men on the male version of the show seemed to have something against
lesbians in general. Which shocked me, I would think that gay men and lesbians
should view each other as allies. Another thing that bothered me was all the
comments about the women’s looks. A lot of the men on the show were not lookers
but they were not judged by their looks, viewers opinions seemed to be based on
their personality. For the women viewers didn’t seem to care what the women
said but more on how they looked. It is really frustrating to look at those
comments and feel like there is nothing that you can say to change their mind.
The network has not started a second season for the lesbian version. The guys
are on their fourth season.
