What's in a name?

Quite recently talks about Jamie Lee Curtis’ sexuality were doing rounds. People thought she was a hermaphrodite. Why? For one, she has a unisex name. Second, she adopted two kids instead of conceiving them. Pointing fingers at people’s sexuality because of their name, their acts, is this what the society does?

What if a person has three chromosomes? It doesn’t make her a less of a human being. Why scrutinize them for being what they are? Why ask them to choose one gender? It is a well-known fact that people with hermaphrodite cannot be cured. Then why try and give them a single gender. They were born with three chromosomes; one can’t just take away the extra chromosome. Intersex people have health problems like everyone else. Mutilating their bodies is not a cure. It is simply barbaric. There are health problems specific to their body type and adding to the pain by performing several surgeries is just magnifying the suffering.

Undergoing several surgeries since birth, asking them to live in a society which accepts only two genders, asking them to live with the gender the doctor has decided for them, changing their name when the bodily transition is complete, this is what a life of a hermaphrodite looks like. Is this transition really worth the money, time and pain? Why not just accept the difference and let the person a happy life, however he or she wants to?
